Placerville Real Estate

Originally called "Old Dry Diggings" and later "Hangtown" for it's zealous embrace of gallows justice, the history of Placerville begins with the California Gold Rush. After gold was discovered in Sutter's Mill in Coloma in 1848, the town grew up as an important early supply center for the many forty-niners who flocked to the area to make their fortunes. Indeed, the town gets its name from the "placer" gold deposits and the rich placer mines that grew up along them. It's been estimated that these mines have produced $25 million in gold over the years.

Placerville's prosperity continues today. It is the county seat and the center of Government, financial, and civic activity for the county. It is the also the home of the Mountain Democrat, California's oldest newspaper.

Placerville is located near historic Coloma, Apple Hill ranches, and several premier wineries. It is centrally located between the ski resorts and parks of Lake Tahoe and the eastern portion of the county, and the city lights and metropolitan attractions of Sacramento to the west.

Placerville homes include many beautifully restored older homes that simply cannot be found in the western end of the county, as well as a variety of homes in quiet, rural settings.
